The Stereotype
Have you ever read The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman? If so, one would know that in the book a stereotype is given to a certain group of people. And if you don't know what a stereotype is, a stereotype is a generalized assumption about a group of people that usually isn't true for every individual in the group. The stereotype in the book is given against white people in the south. This stereotype says that all white people in the south hate black people, own slaves, and are for slavery.Even though this was true for a lot of white people in the south, it wasn't true for everyone. One example of this stereotype not being true for everyone is The old man in the ninth section of the book titled in which the section is titled "An Old Man". Unlike his stereotype, the old man shows compassion, care, and kindness. He shows this when Jane and Ned are at his house and he is giving them food, shelter, and guidance. So as you can see, although some stereotypes might be true, they usually aren't true for everyone.
